Dr. Maria Berkel encounters Paul Freytag as she makes her way to her new job at the hospital in the village of Somabhula. Paul, a dare-devil pilot of Austrian origin, earns a living by carrying out all manner of transport jobs in his Cessna - one of which is to fly Maria from Johannesburg to the little village where she is to spend a year as a doctor, doing her bit to improve the world around her. It quickly becomes apparent that they couldn't possibly have anything in common, the ambitious, idealistic Maria and Paul, the rough and ready loner with a quick wit and macho manners.
